Transformation of a Former Hoghouse

Brandenburg

Client: private

Design Proposal

Part of an expansive, 110-year-old former pigsty, which now is used as an artist's storage space, was rented by the client for 10 years in order to transform it into a weekend vacation home while keeping costs low.

An architectural "envelope" was designed to be inserted through the roof of the pig stall. When the client moves out of the building, she can take the "envelope" with her for eventual reuse in a different context.

Five openings are cut into the existing structure to provide additional light and access.

The living space is accessed over a large terrace, which is built onto a scaffolding construction mounted along the building's facade. A large garage door is inserted into the facade so that during summertime the 80m² interior space extends towards the terrace.
